About Ken Ulman

On December 4, 2006, at the age of 32, Ken Ulman was sworn in as Howard County Executive - the youngest County Executive ever elected in the State of Maryland.

After representing District 4 as a County Council member, Ken was more than ready to take on the challenge of representing every citizen who calls Howard County home.

Ken has been called "smart, committed and focused." In his first two years in office Ulman has followed through on his campaign promise to focus on the basics of good government: public safety, education, and protecting the environment, all of which contribute to the enviable quality of life in Howard County. And that focus has not gone unnoticed, in the past year both Forbes and Money Magazine have ranked Howard County as one of the top places in the country to live.

One of Ulman's signature initiatives has been his annual public forums. In order to hear directly from county residents about their concerns, Ulman has held several public forums where citizens can speak face-to-face with the Executive about any issue. These forums have helped solve many residential issues, and have served as the impetus to changes in County legislation, transit, and zoning. Weeks after one forum, a County resident told Ulman (and reporters) "You've been able to do in two weeks what no one else has done in 34 years."

Regionally, Ken is a member of the Baltimore Metropolitan Council and the Baltimore Regional Transportation Board. He serves on the Maryland Association of Counties' Board of Directors and is also a member of the Board of Directors of the County Executives of America. On the national level, Ulman is the Vice-Chair of Health Policy for the National Association of Counties and Treasurer for the National Democratic County Officials.

Howard Magazine readers voted the Executive "Best Elected Official" in 2007 and 2008, and Ken was named one of Baltimore Magazine's "15 Most Intriguing People of 2007".

With lifelong roots to the community, Ken is a product of the local public school system. He graduated from Centennial High School and received his bachelor's degree in government and politics from the University of Maryland, College Park. He completed his law degree from Georgetown University Law Center.

Before being elected County Executive, Ken ran his own law firm in Columbia which has provided him with experience as both a leader and a businessman.

Here's something you may not know about Ken: he was actually one of the first babies born at Howard County General Hospital. Today the County Executive and his wife Jacqueline live in Columbia with their two young daughters.

About Kent Healy

Kent’s journey began at age 16, when two questions changed the course of his life:

•    Why do people behave the way they do?
•    What makes someone successful?

Driven to find answers, Kent read hundreds of books, attended numerous seminars, and interviewed countless successful individuals.  In his relentless search for answers, Kent has been personally coached by leaders in the field of personal development—and today, he continues his endless journey of seeking and learning.

When asked how he has learned so much at such a young age, he responds, “I’m simply a student of life.  I have an insatiable appetite to learn about human behavior and potential.  I enjoy learning how to maximize our efforts, performance, and results.”

Born in San Jose, California, Kent Healy was 10 when he set off with his family to continue their lives in New Zealand, where he would remain for 8 years before returning back to California.  He started his first business, Reactor Board Tech, at age 15.  Reactor manufactured skimboards, skateboards, T-shirts, and other products.  Managing his small business, Kent realized that he was not learning some very important life skills in school.  While Math, English, History, and Science are important, Kent was fortunate to learn early in life that there were many more skills needed to lead an extraordinary life.  This is when Kent began researching the science of success.

By age 17, Kent decided to partner with his brother to help millions of other students succeed in the real world.  The result was their book, “Cool Stuff” They Should Teach In School.  Since its publication, the overwhelming positive feedback drove Kent to found a publishing company called “Cool Stuff” Media, Inc.  The publication caught the media’s attention, and that attention brought with it invitations for guest appearances on more than 100 TV and radio shows around the country.

At age 22, Kent taught a high school class titled The Science of Success, encompassing practical psychology and peak-performance strategies.  Today he is a highly requested guest lecturer at numerous schools and colleges nationwide.  Selected from people across the nation to be one of ten contestants on a new groundbreaking TV show called, The Messengers, Kent competed as the youngest contestant for the title “America’s Next Great Inspirational Speaker.”

Currently a columnist for several newspapers, Kent also writes feature articles for various magazines across the country.  A perennial author, Kent is always working on yet another book.  His writing caught the attention of internationally recognized authors.  Jack Canfield, the co-creator of the Chicken Soup for the Soul® series, invited Kent to write The Success Principles for Teens based on Jack’s international best-selling book, The Success Principles.
